Stills from The Color Of Pomegranates (Սայաթ-Նովաg) Sayat Nova ~ a 1968 Armenian film by director Sergei Parajanov.
It's a visually stunning and deeply iconographic biography of Sayat Nova (King of Song). Parajanov lived a life marked by surpression ~ he was repeatedly imprisoned in the USSR due to his style of film, coupled with his controversial lifestyle and behaviour. "An eclectic group of artists, filmmakers and activists protested, to little avail, on behalf of Parajanov, among them, Yves Saint Laurent, Françoise Sagan, Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Luis Buñuel, Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Mikhail Vartanov)." source
From the opening scene "The film does not attempt to tell the life story of a poet. Rather, the filmmaker had tried to recreate the poet's inner world, through the trepidations of his soul, his passions and torments, widely utilizing the symbolism and allegories specific to the tradition of medieval Armenian poet troubadours (Ashough)"
"Paradjanov made films not about how things are, but how they would have been had he been God." - Alexei Korotyukov
